Mr. Cooper, one of America’s largest nonbank mortgage loan servicers, suffered a cyberattack last week that disrupted loan payments and other transactions for millions of customers. The company, based in Coppell, Texas, said in a regulatory filing last week that it was attacked on Oct. 31. A notice on its website said Mr. Cooper “took immediate steps to lock down our systems” — which prevented customers from making online loan payments or gaining access to their account information. The company said Monday afternoon that it had restored its system for accepting online payments. The notice also pointed customers toward options for making payments by phone, mail, Western Union or MoneyGram.

But the watchdog's future may be in peril thanks to a case now before the U.S. Supreme Court. Pro-business conservatives and their Republican allies believe the court fight has brought them closer than ever to dismantling the CFPB. Congress, then controlled by Democrats, authorized the agency to supervise certain financial institutions' compliance with federal consumer laws, backed by the threat of lawsuits and fines. Circuit Court of Appeals last October ruled that the agency's funding structure violated the Constitution. Biden's administration told the Supreme Court that the CFPB's funding structure approved by Congress - with a fixed amount going to the agency annually - was effectively "a standing, capped lump-sum appropriation."

The company uses a blockchain-based messaging system, akin to SWIFT, to approve speedy transactions between a network of banks and other financial institutions. A Ripple spokesperson declined to comment on the size of the deal but said that it is less than the sum Ripple paid to buy Metaco. Ripple also obtained a Nevada trust with its acquisition of Fortress Trust, adding to its growing list of regulatory permits globally. The company told CNBC previously it was also looking to get an e-money license with the Irish central bank.

In this photo illustration, a visual representation of the digital Cryptocurrency Ripple is displayed on January 30, 2018 in Paris, France. Ripple disputed the claims, insisting XRP cannot be considered a security and is more akin to a commodity. Meanwhile, Tetragon, a U.K.-based investor that previously backed Ripple, sold its stake back to Ripple after unsuccessfully trying to sue the company to redeem its cash. Asked whether the ruling meant that American banks would return to Ripple to use its ODL product, Alderoty said: "I think the answer to that is yes." Ripple also uses blockchain in its business to send messages between banks, kind of like a blockchain-based alternative to Swift.

Two crypto platforms, Voyager and Bittrex, have recently declared bankruptcy, and investors no longer have access to their crypto. To keep your crypto safe with other platforms, consider "cold storage," which refers to keeping your crypto offline. The Voyager and Bittrex bankruptcies are part of a prolonged "crypto winter" along with other crypto company bankruptcies of the past year, including FTX, Celsius, and more. Globally, countries are evaluating Central Bank Digital Currencies, the development of which you can track via the Atlantic Council's website. Regardless of the crypto winter and continuing cascade of crypto platform bankruptcies, digital currencies aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
Haas F1 boss Steiner plays it by the book

LONDON, April 20 (Reuters) - Haas boss Guenther Steiner has famously not watched the Netflix 'Drive to Survive' docu-series that made him a cult hero for a new wave of Formula One fans, but he has read every word of 'Surviving to Drive'. If they feel happy, I’m happy for them," said Steiner. He came back in 2005 when Red Bull bought the Jaguar team but then moved to NASCAR, returning to F1 when Haas debuted in 2016. RARE EXAMPLEThe book is a rare example of an active F1 boss putting his thoughts into print, however forthright and uncomplimentary. Ralf Schumacher, brother of seven times world champion Michael and uncle of Haas's dropped former driver Mick, is unlikely to enjoy it.
LONDON, April 20 (Reuters) - Half the Formula One calendar could be turned into sprint weekends if changes to the format are given the go-ahead and prove a hit in Baku next week, according to Haas team boss Guenther Steiner. MotoGP has already turned its whole calendar into two-race weekends, with a sprint on Saturday and the main event on Sunday. "I don’t know if we will do it every race weekend. But the F1 promoter will know what to do," Steiner told Reuters in an interview through team sponsor MoneyGram. Steiner said there would still be a need for some race weekends with three practice sessions and just a Sunday grand prix but the current Saturday sprint format needed changing.
Then there's mobile money, which has been around since the early 2000s. Africa's mobile money transactions rose 39% to more than $700 billion in 2021, according to data from the GSM Association, a non-profit representing mobile network operators worldwide. That cash network was extraordinarily difficult and expensive to build, which is why there aren't a lot of direct competitors. Bitnob is SMS-based and piggybacks on the mobile money system, making it easier for people to send money directly into bank accounts and mobile money wallets in African countries. "We're able to settle into bank accounts or mobile money accounts, without the recipients having to interact with bitcoin themselves," Parah tells CNBC.

The ruling authored by Jackson, who was confirmed last year by the Senate as the newest of the nine justices, was unanimous. Under that law, money orders that go uncashed can be generally taken by the state in which they are purchased. Circuit Judge Pierre Leval, later agreed with Delaware's view that they were not legally money orders but were "third-party bank checks." Jackson rejected that position, saying the financial instruments were similar to money orders in function and operation by allowing prepayment of a specified amount to a specific person. "And none of the differences Delaware identifies relates to the statutory text or ordinary meaning of a money order," Jackson wrote.
U.S. Exempts Earthquake Aid to Syria From Sanctions

Funds sent to Syria for earthquake relief that might otherwise be barred by U.S. sanctions are exempted for about six months, the U.S. Treasury Department said. The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which implements and enforces U.S. sanctions, issued a general license Thursday night allowing U.S. banks and money transmitters to process transactions to and from Syria if they are intended for earthquake aid. The language is seen as providing more protection to financial institutions processing the transactions, sanctions experts said. Paul Carroll, director of the Charity & Security Network, a resource and advocacy center for nonprofit organizations, said delivering aid to Syria also faces logistical challenges. “The obstacles to getting aid to Syria [for earthquake relief] is more about parties, the bad and good guys, than about the sanctions themselves,” Mr. Carroll said.
The number of female viewers was up 34% and averaged 28% of the audience, while significantly younger fans were also watching. "I have kids of college age and they have friends and those friends have watch parties on Sunday mornings. It’s not what I was doing in college, it really wasn’t there," MoneyGram's marketing head Greg Hall told Reuters. Holmes said MoneyGram's global business made Formula One a good fit to reach a younger, digitally-aware consumer demographic. "For us to push the brand as faster, more interesting, cooler... the association with Formula One makes a huge difference."
Law enforcement agencies have routinely accessed the vast trove of money transfer records without court oversight, Wyden said. The TRAC database was created as part of a 2014 money laundering settlement between the Arizona attorney general's office and Western Union (WU.N). The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, DHS and Arizona attorney general's office have all asked for data from money transfer companies and directed them to send data to TRAC, Wyden said. Western Union, MoneyGram International (MGI.O), Viamericas Corp, and Euronet Worldwide (EEFT.O) are among the companies that have shared customer data with TRAC in bulk, he added. Wyden announced in March that HSI issued custom summonses, a type of subpoena, for millions of money transfer records between Mexican residents and people living in four U.S. states.
